Free WiFi in Mexico: Connectivity without borders

Mexico is moving towards a more connected country thanks to the "Internet for All" program, a federal government initiative that seeks to guarantee free Internet access throughout the country, especially in public spaces and marginalized communities.

This program has enabled the installation of tens of thousands of free WiFi hotspots in:

  • Public squares
  • Schools Hospitals and clinics
  • Libraries Community centers
  • Government offices
  • Tourist spaces

Free and unlimited connection National and international visitors can connect freely to these hotspots.

All you need is a WiFi enabled device: the network is usually displayed as "Internet para todos," "Red Pública Gratis," or sometimes under the name of a local or state agency.

All of these points should provide a useful break from international roaming charges or excessive use of mobile data during your stay in Mexico.

Is it safe?
Yes. These systems don't collect personal data and they don't require registration. In fact, they're prohibited by law from doing so or requiring that you sign up. In most cases, you just need to accept the terms of use and you can connect.

Some public networks offer the option to share your location only in case of emergency, and this is integrated with local civil protection systems.

Expanding technology
The program has been possible thanks to collaboration between government institutions such as:

  • CFE Telecomunicaciones e Internet para Todos (CFE-TEIT)
  • Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP)
  • Secretaría de Bienestar
  • State and municipal governments

In several cities in the country, such as Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mérida, Oaxaca or Puebla, there are also complementary local initiatives that offer additional coverage in historical centers, parks and public transportation stations.

Link with security systems
In some regions, WiFi hotspots are also integrated with video surveillance and emergency response systems.

This means they can function as tools to strengthen security, help in critical situations and keep citizens and visitors connected to civil protection services.
