Visa & Passport Requirements for Mexico

Visas and Passports for entering Mexico

If you are planning a trip to Mexico, you will be happy to know that citizens of many countries do not require a tourist visa to enter the country for tourism, business or transit purposes, as long as their stay does not exceed180 days.

Do I need a visa to visit Mexico?

You do not need a visa to enter Mexico if you have a valid passport from any of the following countries:

Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Korea, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States, Uruguay or Venezuela.

  • A passport valid for the entire period of stay.

  • Completion of the Multiple Migration Form (FMM), which serves as an entry permit. In many cases, airlines include it as part of the flight process.

  • State the reason for the trip and, if necessary, demonstrate economic solvency or proof of lodging.

The stay permit for tourists is generally up to 180 days, although the exact duration is at the discretion of the immigration officer at the time of entry. It is important to keep the FMM during your stay, as you will need to hand it in when you leave the country. In case of loss, a fine may be applied.

What are the passport requirements?

To enter Mexico, your passport must be valid throughout your stay in the country. Although a minimum validity of six months is not required as in other destinations, it is highly recommended to have a passport that is not about to expire to avoid setbacks.

Also, make sure you have pages available for entry and exit stamps, and that the passport is in good physical condition.

If you need a visa

If your country is not on the visa waiver list, you must apply for a visitor's visa without permission to engage in remunerated activities at the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate before traveling.

Common requirements include:

  • Valid passport

  • Proof of financial solvency

  • Flight and lodging reservation

  • Payment of consular fees

The exact process and requirements may vary depending on your country of origin.

Important exceptions

If you have a valid visa or permanent residency in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom or any Schengen country, you may enter Mexico without a Mexican visa, regardless of your nationality. This facility also applies to those who are permanent residents in Chile, Colombia and Peru, by virtue of regional agreements.

For more updated details, consult the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or contact the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate.
